IISs, Mumbai will be set up at the campus of National Skill Training Institute in collaboration with the Tata Education Development Trust (TEDT), chosen through competitive bidding.
In a concerted effort to push world-class skilling in India, government will soon start construction of the Indian Institute of Skills in Mumbai. This is the second IISs being set up following an approval from the Cabinet to set up three IISs in the country, one each in Kanpur, Mumbai and Ahmedabad as not for profit projects on public-private-partnership mode.
Skills development minister Mahendra Nath Pandey will lay the foundation stone of IIS, Mumbai on Wednesday.

“The vision behind setting up IIS was to build world-class skill training centres by learning from and imbibing best practices from internationally renowned existing skill institutions,” the ministry said in a statement.
According to the ministry, the concept of the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) is on the lines of that of the IITs and IIMs in India and would be premium institutes for skill development in the country offering latest skill courses aligned to industry 4.0.
These would be set up in PPP mode with specific features like state-of-art skill centre uniquely conceptualized to bring in best in class infrastructure and facilities to meet the aspirations of students, who would directly enter the skill learning domain through ITI or diploma courses instead of the traditionally preferred pathway of higher education
While the government would provide access to its land to the private partners through a licence for five year period. The private partner would have to commit to train a minimum of 5000 students every year for five years after commencement of operations, with campus placement of at least 70% of the trainees.
The duration of the period for which such access to government land would be provided would be 25 years with comprehensive project reviews at a regular interval of five years.
