Ethiopia plans national data center for cloud storage

Ethiopia will establish a Tier III national data center to store agency and citizen data securely and offer cloud/colo services for cloud storage.

First reported by Addis Fortune, the center will be designed by The Ministry of Innovation & Technology and tenders for contractors will be announced next month.

Jack of all trades

Ahmedin Mohammed, State Minister for Innovation & Technology, said that although the country has a lot of private ‘institutional-based’ national data centers, this new facility will be different and ‘highly tolerant’ to disruptions.

The facility is located at ICT Park, close to Bole Lemi Industrial Park in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital. Bole Lemi Industrial Park is considered Ethiopia’s Silicon Valley and is home to operators like ZTW, Techno Mobile, and Security Innovation Network.

Currently, the Ministry operates another data center that hosts for public bodies, universities, telcos, and banks – this new facility will be following a similar model. However, when completed, it will be the primary location for government digital workloads.

The data center is expected to be launched next year.
