The newly established department of Neurosurgery at Rashtra Sant Tukadoji Regional Cancer Center (RST RCC) has performed its first surgery for spinal cord tumour successfully on a 50-year-old female patient from Gadchiroli. The patient has a remarkable recovery and was discharged.

Dr Subhrajit Dasgupta, director of RST RCH, told TOI that it was the first neurosurgery in this hospital after it got recognition as Tertiary Cancer Care Centre(TCCC) this July.

“It’s a new beginning for our department of Neurosurgery. Our team of doctors performed this surgery under neurosurgeon Dr Vivek Agrawal who is a consultant neurosurgeon here. This is major development in the field of Central India’s critical care as RST is now fully equipped with all the modern gadgetry required for minor and major neurosurgical procedures,” he said.

Dr Agrawal informed that the patient from Gadchiroli had a severe difficulty in walking due to weakness and pain. On MRI investigations, she was found to have intramural extra medullary spinal tumour (Schwanerma) at level of D-6 (Thorasic). While Dr Agrawal performed the surgery, Dr Anjali Kolhe and Dr Hemlata Sherke provided the anaesthesia.

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare designated the RST Hospital as TCCC in July under National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, CVD and Stroke (NPCDCS). The hospital received assistance of Rs45 crore from central government to develop facilities to manage diabetes, brain stroke, trauma, heart attack, and cancer patients.

“For this, a new 200-bedded modern hospital is also under construction and likely to be completed in 2 years. RST hospital will continue to provide affordable health care for which we are known across Central India. In fact, now we will be able to serve the poor cancer patients in a much more technologically advanced and ambient set up,” said joint director Dr BK Sharma.

This new hospital complex will be having six modular operation theatres, modern CSSD, 40 bedded ICU, private rooms, 35 bedded day care chemo ward, and various other departments spread over five floors.
